Back Lift: Surgical Tightening of Back Skin

A back lift (back skin tightening) removes excess skin folds from the back, typically resulting from significant weight loss, bariatric surgery, or ageing. The procedure can address the upper back ("bra rolls"), lower back, or the entire back in combination with a lower body lift.

Types of Back Lift

Bra-Line Back Lift (Upper Back)

Incision placed along the bra line — scar is hidden under a bra or swimsuit. Removes upper back rolls. Common after major weight loss. Often combined with arm lift.

Lower Back Lift

Part of a circumferential lower body lift — incision runs around the waist/hips. Addresses lower back rolls, flanks and often combined with buttock lift.

Indications

  • Significant weight loss (bariatric surgery, diet/exercise)
  • Skin laxity due to ageing
  • Excess skin folds causing hygiene problems or discomfort

Recovery

Compression garment for 6 weeks. Restricted arm movement initially. Back to work: 2–3 weeks. Avoid strenuous exercise: 6–8 weeks.
