Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): Methods, Procedure and Costs
The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is one of the most frequently performed and effective body contouring procedures in plastic and aesthetic surgery. It targets patients who, following significant weight loss, pregnancies, or age-related skin changes, have excess skin and weakened abdominal muscles that cannot be improved through exercise alone.
Indications
- Excess skin after pregnancy (diastasis recti correction)
- Skin sagging after massive weight loss
- Loose skin due to aging and loss of elasticity
- Abdominal apron (panniculus) with hygiene problems
Types of Abdominoplasty
Full Abdominoplasty
The most comprehensive method: excess skin and fat are removed from the lower and upper abdomen, the abdominal muscles are tightened (diastasis correction), and the navel is repositioned. Result: flat, toned abdomen with a deep horizontal scar.
Mini-Abdominoplasty
For skin excess limited to the area below the navel only. Shorter scar, no navel repositioning. Shorter recovery time than full abdominoplasty.
Extended Abdominoplasty
Includes the flanks and lower back — ideal after massive weight loss with circumferential skin excess.
Procedure
- General anaesthesia (2–4 hours)
- Horizontal incision along the pubic hairline
- Elevation and removal of excess skin
- Tightening of the abdominal fascia (diastasis repair)
- Repositioning of the navel
- Closure with drains
Recovery
- Hospital stay: 1–2 nights
- Compression garment for 6–8 weeks
- Return to light work: 3–4 weeks
- Sport after 8–12 weeks
- Final result after 6–12 months (scar maturation)
Costs
| Procedure | Costs |
|---|---|
| Mini-abdominoplasty | €4,500–€7,000 |
| Full abdominoplasty | €6,000–€12,000 |
| Extended abdominoplasty | €8,000–€15,000 |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between tummy tuck and liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat but does not address excess skin or weakened muscles. A tummy tuck removes excess skin, tightens muscles, and reshapes the abdominal contour. Both can be combined (lipo-abdominoplasty) for optimal results.
