Thigh Lift: Surgical Tightening of Sagging Thigh Skin

A thigh lift (thighplasty) removes excess skin and fat from the thigh area to create a smoother, firmer contour. It is most commonly indicated after significant weight loss (bariatric surgery), massive weight loss, or age-related skin laxity. Unlike liposuction, which removes fat, a thigh lift specifically addresses excess skin.

Types of Thigh Lift

Inner Thigh Lift (Medial Thighplasty)

Most common type. Incision in the groin crease, sometimes extending down the inner thigh. Addresses skin laxity of the upper inner thigh. Scar: hidden in groin fold.

Vertical Thigh Lift

For more extensive skin excess, incision extends from the groin crease to the knee along the inner thigh. More scar, but greater correction. Typically needed after massive weight loss.

Outer Thigh Lift (Lateral Thighplasty)

Addresses outer thigh and hip area. Incision runs along the outer hip/bikini line and may extend to the lower back — often combined with a lower body lift.

Procedure

Performed under general anaesthesia. Duration: 2–4 hours depending on extent. Usually requires 1–2 nights hospital stay.

Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising: 2–4 weeks
  • Back to light activities: 2 weeks
  • Full activity: 6–8 weeks
  • Final scar maturation: 12–18 months
