Age Spot Removal: Treatments for Liver Spots and Pigmentation

Age spots (solar lentigines, liver spots) are flat, brown or dark patches caused by cumulative UV radiation exposure. They most commonly appear on the face, hands, décolleté and forearms in people over 40. While harmless, they are a cosmetic concern — and importantly, should be distinguished from melanoma by a dermatologist before treatment.

Treatment Methods

Q-Switched Laser / Nd:YAG Laser

The gold standard for targeted pigmentation removal. The laser energy is selectively absorbed by melanin, fragmenting pigment particles without damaging surrounding skin. 1–3 sessions usually sufficient. Very precise.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Broadband light targets multiple pigment types simultaneously. Less precise than laser but covers larger areas efficiently. Good for diffuse sun damage across the face or décolleté.

Cryotherapy

Liquid nitrogen freezes isolated spots. Simple, low-cost. May leave temporary whitening. Best for individual well-defined spots.

Chemical Peel

Medium-depth peels (TCA 20–30%) improve diffuse pigmentation. Multiple sessions may be needed.

Topical Depigmentation

Hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, retinoids — used as maintenance or preparation before procedures. Not standalone removal for established spots.

Costs

MethodCost per session
Q-switched laser (face)€200–€500
IPL photorejuvenation€200–€400
Cryotherapy (per spot)€50–€150
Chemical peel (TCA)€200–€500

Prevention

Consistent daily SPF 50+ sunscreen application is the single most effective measure to prevent new age spots and stop existing ones from darkening.
