Tattoo Removal: Laser Treatment for Permanent Tattoos

Laser tattoo removal is the most effective and safest method for removing permanent tattoos. Q-switched and picosecond lasers deliver ultra-short pulses of light energy that shatter tattoo ink particles into tiny fragments, which are then cleared by the immune system.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

The laser emits specific wavelengths absorbed by different ink colours. The rapid energy creates a photoacoustic effect, fragmenting ink particles without significantly heating the surrounding skin. Over several weeks, macrophages carry away the ink fragments.

Laser Technologies

  • Q-switched Nd:YAG (1064 nm / 532 nm): removes black, dark blue and red ink
  • Q-switched alexandrite (755 nm): effective for green and blue ink
  • Picosecond lasers (PicoSure, PicoWay): faster, more effective for resistant and colourful tattoos; generally fewer sessions needed

Number of Sessions Required

Varies significantly based on:

  • Ink density and layers
  • Ink colours (black/grey easiest; yellow, white, light blue most difficult)
  • Skin type (darker skin types = higher risk of PIH)
  • Tattoo age (older tattoos fade faster)
  • Location (better blood supply = faster clearance)

Average: 6–12 sessions. Professional tattoos: 8–15+ sessions. Amateur tattoos: 4–8 sessions.

Costs

Tattoo SizeCost per session
Small (postage-stamp size)€80–€150
Medium (palm-sized)€150–€350
Large (A4-sized)€300–€600
Sleeve / large back piece€500–€1,500

Is Complete Removal Possible?

In most cases, yes — especially for black and dark tattoos. Some ink colours (white, yellow, light blue) may be very resistant. Realistic expectation: 80–95% clearance in most cases. Complete disappearance possible with sufficient sessions and the right technology.
