Stretch Mark Removal: Methods, Costs and Results
Stretch marks (striae), medically known as striae gravidarum (after pregnancy) or striae distensae (from rapid growth or weight change), are among the most common skin changes. They develop when the skin is stretched faster than it can adapt, tearing the connective tissue fibres in the dermis. Complete removal is not always possible, but modern treatments can significantly reduce their appearance.
Why Do Stretch Marks Form?
- Pregnancy: rapid skin stretching over the abdomen, breasts and thighs
- Rapid weight gain or loss: sudden stretching of connective tissue
- Growth spurts in adolescence: rapid height increase
- Hormonal changes: cortisol weakens connective tissue fibres
- Genetic predisposition: weak connective tissue is hereditary
Appearance of Stretch Marks
Fresh stretch marks (red/purple, striae rubrae): Blood vessels still active — best time for treatment. Old stretch marks (white/silver, striae albae): Scar tissue without active blood vessels — harder to treat, but still improvable.
Treatment Methods
Laser Treatments
- Fractional CO2 laser: Most effective for old, white stretch marks; stimulates collagen and resurfaces skin texture
- Pulsed dye laser (PDL): Best for fresh, red stretch marks; targets blood vessels
- Nd:YAG laser: Suitable for darker skin types
Microneedling / Dermapen
Microneedling creates micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production. Particularly effective for improving texture and reducing depth of stretch marks. Often combined with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for enhanced results.
Chemical Peels
TCA peels (20–30%) stimulate skin renewal and improve the appearance of fresh stretch marks. Multiple sessions required.
Radiofrequency (RF) / HIFU
Thermal energy stimulates collagen remodelling and tightens the surrounding skin. Good for improving skin texture around stretch marks.
Topical Treatments
- Tretinoin (retinoid): Effective for fresh stretch marks; not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Hyaluronic acid and vitamin C: Supportive, but limited effect on established stretch marks
Costs per Session
| Method | Costs per Session |
|---|---|
| Fractional laser (CO2/Fraxel) | €300–€800 |
| Pulsed dye laser | €200–€500 |
| Microneedling + PRP | €250–€500 |
| Chemical peel (TCA) | €150–€300 |
| Radiofrequency | €200–€500 |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can stretch marks be completely removed?
Complete removal is generally not possible — stretch marks are scar tissue in the dermis. However, modern treatments can achieve a significant improvement: reduction in visibility, improved skin texture, and better colour matching to surrounding skin. Fresh (red) stretch marks respond better than old (white) ones.
How many treatment sessions are needed?
Typically 3–6 sessions depending on the method and severity. Laser treatments are spaced 4–8 weeks apart; microneedling every 4–6 weeks.
