Couperose Treatment: Effective Therapies for Facial Thread Veins

Couperose (spider veins, telangiectasia) is a vascular skin condition characterised by persistent redness, visible fine capillaries and thread veins, particularly on the cheeks, nose and chin. Modern treatments can effectively reduce these vascular changes.

What Is Couperose?

Couperose refers to the dilation of superficial skin capillaries that become permanently visible. This differs from rosacea, which involves inflammatory episodes in addition to vascular changes. Both conditions can coexist and should be differentiated by a dermatologist.

Causes

  • Genetic predisposition: Fair, thin skin types (Fitzpatrick I–II)
  • UV damage: Chronic sun exposure weakens capillary walls
  • Temperature fluctuations: Frequent changes between heat and cold
  • Alcohol, spicy food: Triggers vasodilation
  • Rosacea: Inflammatory vascular condition

Treatment Methods

Laser Treatment (Nd:YAG / Pulsed Dye Laser)

Most effective method for couperose. Laser energy is absorbed by haemoglobin in the blood vessels, causing the vessel walls to collapse without damaging surrounding tissue. 1–3 sessions per area; permanent results.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Broad-spectrum light targets multiple vascular and pigment changes simultaneously. Particularly effective for diffuse redness and multiple small thread veins. 3–5 sessions.

Electrocoagulation / Thermocoagulation

Fine probe applies heat directly to individual thread veins. Very precise; suitable for isolated larger vessels.

Costs

MethodCosts per Session
Laser treatment (Nd:YAG / PDL)€200–€500
IPL treatment€150–€350
Electrocoagulation€100–€250

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can couperose be permanently cured?

Existing thread veins can be permanently eliminated by laser or IPL. However, the underlying predisposition remains — new thread veins can form over time. Sun protection (SPF 50+), avoiding triggers (alcohol, heat) and skin-strengthening skincare slow the progression.
