Overview: Sofwave
Sofwave is a non-invasive skin tightening and lifting system from Israeli company Sofwave Medical, based on patented SUPERB technology (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam). FDA-cleared in 2019 for non-invasive face, neck, and brow tightening and lifting, it is available in over 40 countries and has rapidly become a leading ultrasound-based skin tightening technology.
Sofwave differentiates itself from other ultrasound technologies like HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) through its specific frequency (1.5 MHz) and unique applicator design delivering seven parallel ultrasound microbeams simultaneously, enabling precise energy delivery into the mid-dermis (1.5 mm depth) without damaging the epidermis or deeper subcutaneous tissue.
SUPERB Technology
The Sofwave applicator contains seven miniature ultrasound transducers that fire synchronously, creating seven parallel energy foci in the mid-dermis. This energy heats collagen in the target tissue to 60 to 70°C, causing immediate contraction and long-term neocollagenesis.
A special feature of Sofwave is the integrated Sofcool cooling system: while ultrasound energy penetrates deep into the dermis, an active cooling system continuously cools the epidermis. This protects the skin surface and allows comfortable treatment without anesthesia.
Indications and FDA Clearances
FDA-cleared indications: tightening and lifting of face, neck, and décolleté; brow and temple lifting; reduction of wrinkles (nasolabial folds, marionette lines); improvement of skin elasticity. Off-label: body areas such as arms, abdomen, and thighs are also treated.
Treatment Protocol
A Sofwave treatment takes 30 to 45 minutes for the entire face without preparation or downtime. Topical anesthesia optional as the integrated cooling makes treatment largely comfortable. Slight warmth during treatment. Mild redness possible, resolving within hours. A single session is often sufficient; some desire a refresh at 12 months.
