Arion Implants: Adjustable Saline-Filled Breast Implants

Arion implants are saline-filled breast implants with a unique feature: they contain a remote-access valve (port) that allows the surgeon to adjust the fill volume after surgery — adding or removing saline through a small injection into the valve, which is usually placed in the armpit area.

How Arion Implants Work

During surgery, the implant is placed slightly under-filled, allowing easier insertion through a smaller incision. After surgery, during the healing period, the surgeon can adjust the volume via the access port — typically over several weeks until the desired size is achieved. The port can then be removed in a minor procedure, or left in place permanently.

Advantages

  • Post-operative volume adjustment — correct initial sizing without re-operating
  • Can accommodate asymmetry between the two breasts
  • Smaller incision possible due to initial under-fill
  • Patient can participate in final size decision after healing

Disadvantages

  • Saline feel less natural than cohesive silicone gel
  • Additional small procedure to remove/adjust port
  • Less common — fewer surgeons experienced with this system

Indications

  • Patients with significant breast asymmetry
  • Patients uncertain about final desired size
  • Reconstructive cases where tissue expansion is helpful
