Décolleté Rejuvenation: Treatments, Methods and Costs

The décolleté is one of the most visible parts of the body — and one of the first to show signs of ageing. While many people invest in daily skincare routines for their face, the chest and neckline area is often neglected. The result: wrinkles, pigmentation spots, skin laxity and stretch marks that make the skin appear older than it truly is. Modern aesthetic medicine offers a wide range of effective treatments to rejuvenate the décolleté — from laser therapy and skinboosters to radiofrequency and ultrasound lifting.

Why Does the Décolleté Age So Quickly?

The décolleté is subject to a unique combination of ageing factors that make it particularly vulnerable. Unlike the face, which benefits from daily skincare routines, the chest area is often neglected while simultaneously being exposed to numerous biological and mechanical stresses that significantly accelerate the ageing process.

Thin and Sensitive Skin

The skin in the décolleté area is anatomically thinner and more sensitive than at many other parts of the body. It contains fewer sebaceous glands, meaning it is naturally drier and receives less moisture. The dermal layer — the deeper skin layer containing collagen and elastin — is thinner here, making it more susceptible to wrinkle formation, pigment changes and the loss of volume and firmness.

As we age, collagen production decreases — by approximately one percent per year from the age of 25. In the décolleté area, this loss is particularly pronounced because the baseline level is already lower than in the face, resulting in early wrinkles, increasingly sagging skin and an overall older appearance of the chest area.

UV Radiation and Sun Damage

One of the main contributors to premature ageing of the décolleté is ultraviolet radiation. The décolleté is often completely unprotected from the sun in summer, during sport, at the beach or at outdoor pools — and this occurs over many years and decades. UV-A radiation penetrates deep into the dermis and damages collagen and elastin fibres, leading to long-term skin laxity and deep wrinkles. UV-B radiation causes sunburn and stimulates melanocytes to overproduce pigment, resulting in age and pigmentation spots.

Sleeping Position and Mechanical Stress

An often underestimated factor in décolleté ageing is sleeping position. Side sleepers — the majority of the population — press the skin of the décolleté into folds due to gravity. Over many hours per night and decades of time, characteristic vertical sleep lines form that eventually become permanently etched into the skin. Specially designed sleep pillows or a silicone bra for the night can help prevent new sleep lines from forming.

The Most Important Treatment Methods

Modern aesthetic dermatology offers a wide range of treatment options for the décolleté. Depending on skin type, individual needs and the severity of skin ageing, different methods are used. Often the best results come from combining several approaches.

Laser and Fraxel Treatment

Laser treatments are among the most effective methods for rejuvenating the décolleté. The Fraxel laser is one of the best-known fractional lasers, working with a pattern of microscopically small laser channels that are introduced into the skin without damaging all surrounding tissue. It stimulates collagen regeneration and helps lighten pigmentation spots, smooth fine lines and improve overall skin texture.

For pronounced pigmentation spots — known as poikiloderma — IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or Q-switched Nd:YAG laser are particularly suitable. CO2 and Erbium-YAG lasers are ablative and remove superficial skin layers, stimulating intensive collagen regeneration. Costs: €300–700 per session; typically 3–5 sessions recommended.

Skinboosters and Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Skinboosters are low-viscosity hyaluronic acid preparations injected directly into the skin. Unlike classic fillers used for volume augmentation, skinboosters primarily work through deep hydration — hyaluronic acid binds many times its own weight in water, improving skin moisture, elasticity and luminosity from within. Well-known products such as Juvéderm Volite, Restylane Vital or Teosyal Redensity are distributed across the entire décolleté in numerous fine injection points. Results typically last 6–12 months. Costs: €200–500 per session.

Polynucleotides (PDRN)

Polynucleotides — also known as PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotides) — are one of the newer innovations in aesthetic medicine. Injected into the skin, polynucleotides stimulate fibroblasts responsible for producing collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, support wound healing and improve tissue circulation, resulting in improved skin texture and greater elasticity. Typical protocols involve 3–4 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart. Costs: €200–400 per session.

Radiofrequency and Thermage

Radiofrequency treatments use electromagnetic energy to heat the deep tissue of the décolleté. The controlled heat causes immediate contraction of existing collagen fibres and long-term stimulation of new collagen formation. Thermage is one of the best-known and most thoroughly documented radiofrequency systems, particularly effective for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity. Other systems include Morpheus8 (combining microneedling with radiofrequency) and Venus Freeze. A major advantage is minimal downtime. Costs: €200–500 per session.

Ultherapy — Ultrasound Lifting

Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for lifting the neck, chin and brows — and is also used with great success in the décolleté area. The method uses focused ultrasound (HIFU — High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) to precisely heat deep tissue layers without damaging the skin surface. The result is a naturally-appearing, non-surgical lifting effect that develops over 6–12 months. Costs: €800–1,800 per treatment session.

Microneedling and Dermapen

Microneedling — also known as collagen induction therapy — is one of the most versatile treatments for the décolleté. Thousands of tiny microchannels are created in the skin using a Dermapen device, activating the body's natural healing process and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Microneedling is excellent for improving skin texture, reducing fine lines, treating stretch marks and general skin rejuvenation. It can also be combined with PRP, hyaluronic acid or vitamin complexes for enhanced results. Costs: €150–350 per session.

PRP — Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

PRP is a biological treatment in which growth factors from the patient's own blood are used for skin rejuvenation. A small amount of blood is drawn, centrifuged to concentrate platelets, then injected into the décolleté skin or applied via microneedling. Platelets contain numerous growth factors including PDGF, VEGF, EGF and TGF-beta that stimulate fibroblasts and promote collagen synthesis. The combination of PRP with microneedling — the so-called "Vampire Facial" — is particularly effective. Costs: €200–400 per session.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels use acids to remove the top layers of skin and stimulate the cell renewal process. Superficial peels with glycolic acid (AHA), mandelic acid or salicylic acid are suitable for dry, dull skin and mild pigmentation. Medium-depth TCA peels penetrate deeper and are more effective against pronounced pigmentation and medium-depth wrinkles. In the décolleté area, particular care must be taken when choosing a peel, as the skin is more sensitive here than on the face. Costs: €80–300 per session.

Fillers for Décolleté Wrinkles

Hyaluronic acid fillers are an effective means of directly correcting deep wrinkles in the décolleté — particularly the vertical sleep lines that cross the neckline. While skinboosters improve overall skin quality, fillers are injected specifically into deep wrinkles to fill and smooth them. Results typically last 12–18 months. Costs: €200–500 per session.

Prevention: Sleep Bras and Sun Protection

Prevention is just as important as treatment. Specially designed silicone sleep bras hold the breast tissue apart during sleep, preventing the typical décolleté sleep lines from forming. Dedicated décolleté pillows placed between the breasts serve a similar purpose for side sleepers. Sleeping on your back is the most skin-friendly position and avoids all mechanical pressure on the décolleté.

Daily sun protection with SPF 30–50+ applied to the décolleté is the single most impactful preventive measure — studies estimate that up to 80% of visible skin ageing is caused by UV radiation. After any aesthetic treatment, sun protection is absolutely mandatory, as treated skin is particularly sensitive to UV radiation for several weeks.

Home Care and Supportive Skincare

Professional treatments work best when supported by a consistent daily skincare routine:

  • Retinol/Retinoids: Stimulate collagen production, accelerate cell turnover and can lighten pigmentation. Apply in the evening; always follow with sun protection the next morning.
  • Vitamin C: Antioxidant that protects against free radicals and supports collagen synthesis. Apply in the morning under sunscreen.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (topical): Binds moisture in the upper skin layers, complementing professional skinbooster treatments.
  • Peptides: Short-chain amino acid chains that stimulate collagen production (e.g. Argireline, Matrixyl).
  • Niacinamide: Vitamin B3 that improves the skin barrier, reduces pigmentation and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate?

Aesthetic décolleté treatments are suitable for anyone dissatisfied with the appearance of their neckline area who does not have contraindications. Ideal candidates are men and women from their mid-30s who notice the first signs of skin laxity, pigmentation or fine lines. The earlier a healthy skincare routine and professional treatments are begun, the better the results that can be achieved.

Contraindications include: pregnancy and breastfeeding, active infections or inflammations in the treatment area, certain autoimmune diseases, recent isotretinoin therapy (6–12 months waiting period before laser and microneedling), keloid tendency, and metal implants in the treatment area (relevant for radiofrequency and ultrasound).
