Chest Wall Correction

Chest wall correction addresses structural deformities of the anterior thorax that affect both physical appearance and, in severe cases, cardiopulmonary function. The two most common conditions treated are pectus excavatum (funnel chest / sunken chest) and pectus carinatum (pigeon chest / protruding sternum). Both conditions can cause significant psychological distress and physical discomfort.

Pectus Excavatum – Sunken Chest

Pectus excavatum is characterised by a concave depression of the sternum and lower ribs, creating a sunken appearance in the centre of the chest. In mild cases it is a cosmetic concern; in severe cases it can compress the heart and lungs, impairing exercise tolerance and causing shortness of breath. Surgical correction is performed using the Nuss procedure (minimally invasive bar insertion) or the Ravitch procedure (open surgical technique).

Pectus Carinatum – Pigeon Chest

Pectus carinatum presents as an outward protrusion of the sternum, giving the chest a prominent, keel-like appearance. Correction may be achieved through external bracing in adolescents or, for adults who prefer a definitive solution, through surgical remodelling of the chest wall cartilage.

Cosmetic Chest Contouring

Beyond structural correction, aesthetic chest contouring procedures are available for patients who wish to improve the overall appearance of the chest wall. Techniques include silicone chest implants, fat transfer (lipofilling), and liposuction to refine the chest and pectoral region.

Procedure and Recovery

The specific procedure depends on the nature and severity of the deformity. Minimally invasive techniques typically allow discharge within two to three days and return to normal activities within four to six weeks. Open procedures may require a longer recovery period. All patients receive comprehensive post-operative care and follow-up monitoring.
