Tuberous Breast: Correction of Constricted Breast Development

Tuberous breast (tubular breast deformity) is a congenital condition where normal breast development is restricted by constricted tissue bands at the base of the breast. The result is a narrow, tubular breast shape with a high breast fold, enlarged or herniated areola, and insufficient breast volume. It affects one or both breasts and varies widely in severity.

Classification (Grolleau Classification)

  • Type I: deficiency in the lower medial quadrant
  • Type II: deficiency in both lower quadrants
  • Type III: deficiency in all four quadrants — severe constriction

Surgical Correction

Surgery addresses all components of the deformity:

  1. Constricting band release: scoring or releasing the tight fibrotic tissue at the base of the breast to allow normal expansion
  2. Volume augmentation: breast implant placed to add volume and expand the breast envelope
  3. Areola correction: periareolar incision reduces an enlarged areola or corrects herniation
  4. Nipple-areola complex repositioning: if the NAC is too high or too low

Prognosis

Excellent results achievable, though mild residual asymmetry is common. Revision surgery may be needed in severe cases.

Costs

ProcedureCost
Tuberous breast correction (with implants)€5,000–€9,000
Mild correction (areola + tissue release only)€3,000–€5,000
