Facelift: Methods, Procedure, Costs and Results
A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure to rejuvenate the face and neck by lifting and repositioning sagging skin and underlying tissues. It addresses the visible signs of ageing in the lower face and neck region that cannot be effectively treated with non-surgical methods. A well-performed facelift creates a natural, refreshed appearance — not a pulled or operated look.
What a Facelift Can Treat
- Sagging cheeks and jowls
- Deep nasolabial folds (due to descended tissue)
- Loss of jaw definition
- Loose skin in the neck area
- Visible muscle bands in the neck (platysmal bands)
Facelift Techniques
SMAS Facelift (Standard Facelift)
The most common technique. The SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) — the muscular layer under the skin — is tightened separately from the skin. This creates more natural, longer-lasting results than skin-only tightening.
Deep Plane Facelift
A more extensive technique that releases and repositions the deeper facial tissues as one unit. Provides the most comprehensive and long-lasting rejuvenation, particularly for the midface and jowl area.
Mini Facelift (Short Scar Facelift)
For patients with moderate sagging who want less invasive surgery. Smaller incisions, shorter recovery. Less correction than full facelift but suitable for younger patients (40–55 years).
MACS Lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension)
Purse-string sutures lift facial tissues through small incisions near the ears. Less invasive than full facelift with good results for moderate laxity.
Procedure and Anaesthesia
A facelift is performed under general anaesthesia or deep sedation. Duration: 2–5 hours depending on technique and scope. Hospital stay: usually 1 night. Incisions are placed in the natural hairline and around the ear, making scars inconspicuous.
Recovery
- Drains removed after 1–2 days
- Bandage for the first week
- Swelling and bruising for 2–3 weeks
- Presentable appearance after 2–3 weeks
- Final result visible after 3–6 months
- No strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks
Costs
| Procedure | Costs from |
|---|---|
| Mini facelift | €4,000–€7,000 |
| SMAS facelift | €7,000–€12,000 |
| Deep plane facelift | €10,000–€18,000 |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long do facelift results last?
A facelift does not stop the ageing process but sets it back by approximately 7–12 years. Results typically last 7–10 years. Patients who maintain a healthy lifestyle, avoid smoking and protect against UV damage preserve results longer.
At what age is a facelift appropriate?
Most patients are between 45–70 years. The right time is when there is sufficient sagging to warrant surgery but enough tissue elasticity for good results. A consultation with a qualified specialist determines individual suitability.
