Septoplasty: Deviated Septum Correction for Better Breathing

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated nasal septum — the partition of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into two passages. A deviated septum is very common (affecting up to 80% of people to some degree) and can cause nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, snoring, nosebleeds and sinus infections.

Septoplasty vs Rhinoplasty

Septoplasty addresses the internal septum for functional improvement — typically covered by health insurance when medically necessary. Rhinoplasty changes the external appearance of the nose. Both can be combined in a septorhinoplasty.

Procedure

Performed under general or local anaesthesia. All incisions are internal (endonasal approach) — no external scarring. The surgeon straightens the deviated septum cartilage and/or bone. Duration: 30–90 minutes. Usually day surgery or 1-night stay.

Recovery

  • Nasal packing or splints for 1–7 days
  • Swelling and congestion: 2–4 weeks
  • Return to work: 1–2 weeks
  • Avoid contact sports: 4–6 weeks
  • Final breathing improvement: 3–6 months

Costs

ProcedureCost
Septoplasty (functional only)€1,500–€3,500 (often insured)
Septorhinoplasty (functional + aesthetic)€4,000–€8,000
