Lip Filler: Hyaluronic Acid, Costs and Results — Complete Guide

Lip filler treatment is an aesthetic procedure for volumising, defining and reshaping the lips through hyaluronic acid injections. Sensual, well-defined lips are a widely sought aesthetic goal. While cosmetics and lip masks provide a temporary effect lasting only a few hours, lip filler injections deliver results visible for several months. The treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure and primarily uses hyaluronic acid as the filler.

Lip Filler Treatment

Those with naturally thin lips often desire more volume. While special make-up techniques can temporarily create a sensual pout, the effect lasts only a few hours. Additionally, the natural skin ageing process affects the appearance of the lips: over time, perioral lines develop and the skin begins to gradually sag, leaving the lip contour undefined and the mouth appearing even narrower.

Natural lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid gives the lips volume by padding the lip tissue from within. Beyond volumisation, filler injections in the mouth and lip area can achieve additional effects:

  • Enhancing the Cupid's bow (lip heart)
  • Targeted lip modelling to correct asymmetries
  • Greater definition of lip shape
  • Elevation of downturned corners of the mouth
  • Smoothing fine perioral lines

Good to know: Alongside classic lip volumisation, the Russian lip technique is currently trending. This technique pointally defines the central lip area so the lip shape resembles Russian "Matryoshka dolls". The result creates a more natural appearance because the lips look less overly full.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

Lip filler treatment does not usually require a hospital stay as it is performed on an outpatient, non-surgical basis. Compared to surgical lip augmentation, patients therefore experience significantly less pain. Visible scarring, which typically results from aesthetic plastic surgery, is also largely absent.

A significant advantage is above all the filler material itself: hyaluronic acid is well tolerated by most people. The substance occurs naturally in the body where it acts as a water reservoir. In the tissue, this gel-like substance keeps skin firm. Synthetically produced hyaluronic acid is used for lip injections.

Note: A muscle relaxant (Botox) is not suitable for plumping the lips. It primarily reduces expression lines by relaxing facial muscles. Unlike muscle relaxants, hyaluronic acid acts as a filler to give the lips volume.

Disadvantages

Having lips filled can result in an unnatural appearance if too much hyaluronic acid is used. With professional treatment by a specialist physician and an individual treatment plan, this is rarely the case. Should the result nevertheless appear unnatural, hyaluronidase ("Hylase") can be used for correction or complete dissolution of the injected hyaluronic acid.

Treatment Procedure

1. Consultation Before Treatment

Prior to lip filler treatment, a medical consultation takes place with examination of the lips and consideration of possible contraindications. Medical reasons against lip injections must be ruled out. Contraindications include:

  • Herpes and other types of infection
  • Certain medications, e.g. antibiotics
  • Existing pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Specific allergies

2. The Injection

Following the consultation, the injection can take place. Before the lip filler injection, a numbing cream is applied to ensure a comfortable, pain-free treatment. A fine injection needle with hyaluronic acid is then introduced into the lip region to be enhanced. Treatment duration for injections varies; patients should however allow at least 30 minutes for a lip enhancement.

3. Aftercare

After treatment, swelling in the mouth area may occur. This is not unusual — patients will notice a natural subsidence within a few days. At a follow-up appointment, the result can be assessed; the final result is typically fully visible within 14 days.

Side Effects

Because hyaluronic acid is generally well accepted by the body, side effects are rare or minor. Nevertheless, patients should note that a basic risk exists with any medicinal treatment. After lip filler injection, the following side effects may occur:

  • Itching, redness, swelling
  • Haematomas (bruising)
  • Allergic reactions

A slight numbness may occasionally occur after lip injection. This feeling is temporary and usually disappears after a short time. If larger complications, severe pain or unusual symptoms occur after lip injection, a physician should be consulted.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last?

Patients having their lips filled with a hyaluronic acid filler can enjoy the appearance of their enhanced lips for several months. After approximately 3–6 months, the body begins to break down the hyaluronic acid. The breakdown process is individual and can vary from patient to patient. The effect is typically visible for about half a year — and sometimes somewhat longer. Visual longevity can last up to 18 months. Premium products such as Juvéderm Volift or Teosyal Kiss can last up to 12–18 months.

How Often Can Lips Be Filled?

A refresh treatment can take place in consultation with the specialist. When it is advisable depends not only on the patient's wishes but also on tolerability and results. It is important to follow general medical recommendations so that the lips remain voluminous and defined for as long as possible.

Costs

The cost of lip injection depends on the treatment goal and the amount of hyaluronic acid used. Patients should expect at least €250–700 per ml depending on effort and filler volume.

Important: In Germany, lip filler injections are performed by licensed physicians. Treatment by unqualified practitioners can have health-endangering consequences. Anyone wishing lip injections should strictly avoid disreputable offers, which usually come at lower cost.

Before and After: What to Consider

Before having lips filled with hyaluronic acid, patients should, after medical consultation, discontinue any blood-thinning medications. After the injection, it is advisable to initially avoid sport, sauna visits and sun exposure. The injection site should not be touched with bare fingers — bacteria and impurities increase the risk of infection. On the day of treatment, cosmetics and lip care products should be avoided, as these also represent a risk source for inflammation.

Tip: To support the effect of hyaluronic acid, it is recommended to drink sufficient water — as hyaluronic acid binds water in the tissue. This way the lips often remain voluminous until the substance gradually breaks down.

Eating and Drinking After Lip Filler

Hot food and drinks are initially off-limits after lip enhancement with injection. This applies to the first few hours after lip filler treatment. Anyone who does not want to jeopardise the treatment result can use a straw, for example: drinks and soups can be consumed gently this way.

Smoking After Lip Filler

Before and after a lip injection, patients should abstain from cigarettes. The nicotine contained in them can influence and inhibit the effect of hyaluronic acid. Moreover, the long-term effects of smoking are visible in the lip area: the skin around the mouth can sag prematurely through the influence of nicotine as skin ageing progresses more rapidly.

Alternatives to Hyaluronic Acid

Lip correction without surgery is preferentially performed with hyaluronic acid due to its good tolerability and volumising effect. If the substance is not well tolerated, treatment with autologous fat may be worthwhile instead — this is referred to as "lipofilling". A small amount of fat is taken from the patient's own body (e.g. abdomen or thigh) and, after processing under local anaesthesia, injected into the lips. As this is the patient's own fat, this method is considered particularly well tolerated.

Whether hyaluronic acid or autologous fat: with both lip enhancement methods, downtime is minimal. This means patients can return to work after treatment, provided no complaints arise.

Fuller Lips Without Filler

Although natural lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is a realistic option for many people to give their lips more volume and contour, some seek alternatives. Special lip masks with hyaluronic acid as the active ingredient can help temporarily. Products with special peptides that positively influence hydration balance are also available; they aim to help build collagen so that the lips appear full and healthy. Important: The effectiveness of such products often requires regular application and cannot be guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do lip fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid lip fillers typically last 6–12 months. The lips metabolise hyaluronic acid faster than other facial zones due to strong muscle movement. Premium products such as Juvéderm Volift or Teosyal Kiss can last up to 12–18 months.

Are lip fillers painful?

Modern fillers contain lidocaine, which significantly reduces pain. A numbing cream is also usually applied. The sensation is a slight pressure and tingling. After treatment: swelling for 1–5 days (especially after first treatment), tenderness for 24–48 hours.

How natural do lip fillers look?

With the correct technique and appropriate volume, results are very natural. The key lies in proportionality: ideal upper-to-lower lip ratio of 1:1.6. Experienced physicians take individual facial structure and wishes into account. Overdone results arise from too much volume or incorrect placement.

Can lip fillers be dissolved?

Yes, immediately and completely with hyaluronidase. The enzyme dissolves the hyaluronic acid within minutes to hours. Important: only have this performed by an experienced physician. Natural breakdown through metabolisation takes 6–12 months.

What does lip filler treatment cost?

Costs depend on location, specialist and the amount of filler used. Typically €250–700 per ml. It is important to obtain precise cost information from an experienced specialist.

Can lip filler be reversed?

Yes, hyaluronic acid-based lip filler can be reversed at any time by injecting hyaluronidase, which dissolves the filler material. This enables rapid correction or adjustment if desired.

Can I eat normally after lip filler?

Yes, as a rule you can eat and drink normally after lip filler. However, it is recommended to avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks in the first few days after treatment.
