Face yoga is a collection of targeted facial exercises and massage techniques designed to strengthen and tone the 57 muscles of the face, improve circulation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles — without needles or surgery.

How Face Yoga Works

The face contains over 50 muscles attached directly to skin. When these muscles are weak or constantly contracted in habitual positions, the overlying skin can sag or crease. Systematic exercises aim to:

  • Strengthen muscles that have lost tone (e.g. cheeks, jawline)
  • Relax chronically tense muscles that cause expression lines (e.g. frown muscles)
  • Stimulate lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness

Cheek Lifter

Open mouth wide, fold upper lip over teeth, smile and lift cheek muscles upward. Hold 20 seconds, repeat 3 times. Targets sagging cheeks.

Brow Smoother

Place fingers horizontally across forehead, apply gentle outward pressure while raising and lowering eyebrows. Releases tension in the frontalis muscle, softening horizontal lines.

Neck and Jawline Toner

Tilt head back, press tongue to roof of mouth, swallow. Repeat 10–15 times. Targets platysma and submental muscles for a more defined jawline.

Scientific Evidence

A 2018 study published in JAMA Dermatology showed that after 20 weeks of regular face exercises (30 minutes daily for 8 weeks, then every other day), participants appeared approximately 3 years younger based on blinded assessment. Limited evidence overall, but growing research interest.

Who Is Face Yoga Suitable For?

Suitable for everyone, particularly those aged 30–65 wanting non-invasive maintenance. Best results when combined with good skincare. Not a replacement for significant volume loss or deep wrinkles — these require medical intervention.
